Certification and Its
Importance
AYUSH products in India are governed by the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940, under the oversight of the Drugs Controller General and respective state authorities. To enhance consumer trust and ensure quality, the Department of AYUSH introduced a voluntary product certification scheme with support from the Quality Council of India (QCI).
The scheme includes two certification levels:
- Ayush Standard Mark – for compliance with domestic regulatory requirements.
- Ayush Premium Mark – based on WHO-GMP guidelines and stricter international regulations.
Each manufacturing unit seeking certification must apply through an approved certification body accredited by the National Accreditation Board for Certification Bodies (NABCB). Certified units are also subjected to regular surveillance, ensuring sustained compliance and credibility. This initiative supports the global positioning of AYUSH products through quality assurance and regulatory transparency.

The Ayush Certification Mark(s) is for use only by organisations that have achieved product certification.

The Ayush Certification Mark(s) is to be affixed on the product and its packaging to depict product conformity to requirements of the Ayush certification criteria.

The Ayush Certification Mark(s) is owned by the Department of Ayush and provided on its behalf to the certified unit. The Ayush Certification Mark(s) can be used on all the manufacturing unit's communication tools such as company vehicles, letterheads, compliment slips, business cards, marketing collateral, advertising, exhibition graphics, electronic media.

Responsibilities of Certified
AYUSH Organizations

Certified units under the AYUSH scheme must adhere to defined responsibilities to retain their certification. These obligations ensure consistent compliance with certification standards, uphold public trust, and maintain product quality and safety. Organizations are expected to follow guidelines related to certification usage, internal processes, product integrity, and communication protocols. Regular updates, cooperation during assessments, and transparent reporting are essential.
Below is a structured overview of the key responsibilities that certified AYUSH organizations must follow to ensure continued compliance and certification validity:
- The client shall always fulfil the certification requirements including product requirements and changes communicated by the IRQS.
- The client shall take responsibility for the certified product always fulfilling the certification requirements.
- The client shall make all necessary arrangements for the conduct of the evaluation, including provision for examining documentation and records, and access to the relevant location(s), area(s), and personnel for investigation of complaints.
- The client shall make claims regarding certification only in respect of the scope for which certification has been granted.
- The client shall not use its product certification in such a manner as to bring the IRQS into disrepute and does not make any statement regarding its product certification which the certification body may consider misleading or unauthorized.
- Upon suspension or withdrawal of certification, the client shall discontinue its use of all advertising matter that contains any reference thereto and returns as required by the certification scheme any certification documents and takes any other measures. The manufacturing unit has to have procedures in place to ensure that a non-conforming certified AYUSH product that gave rise to the suspension of certification is recalled. The organization shall submit the name of the stockist(s) in 15 days. Depending on the situation, IRQS shall inform OICI of the details of the recalled product(s)/status.
